This ranking system uses a metric called Average Loss Record, or ALR. ALR is calculated by normalizing every team's wins to 12 games, then averaging the normalized records of the team's losses. Teams are then assigned a ranking based on how many losses they have and their ALR. Ties in ranking are broken by which team has the highest average margin of victory.

In calculating average margin of victory, only points against FBS opponents and points in losses against FCS teams are calculated. Points in wins against FCS teams do are not factored in.
